She is known by many names, none of them her own. In truth, she is an unnamed slave, nothing more than a weapon in the hands of her owner in his attempts to provoke political mayhem. When she encounters a handsome young man while on an assignment, she thinks little of him—until he attempts to take what she has stolen. But in her line of work, failure is not an option.
Gillen is intrigued by the mysterious woman who thwarts his mission. But when his path crosses hers again, his intrigue turns to gratitude as the thief he comes to call Eudocia saves his life. The two form a bond of friendship and join forces to wrest control from a group of ruthless rulers. But as their camaraderie blossoms into something more, Gillen and Eudocia must fight for love even as they wage war for a better future.
My review.
From the very beginning, this book hooked me up and I did not even let go of the last page. Even after the end, it stayed with me and I think about it all the time. I notice that I want to read it again because I just enjoyed it so much. It is a definite A.L. winner. Sowards.
A perfect example of why I love historical fiction is this original and captivating story set in 14th century Greece!
From the first line, this fascinating story of a beautiful slave who knows neither her own name nor her parentage captured me and held me reading page after page. The beautiful slave girl without a name is a skilled thief who is bought, raised, and trained by her owner, Thomas. He takes care of her needs, but his punishment is serious when she gets out of line. She dreams of independence, but her condition is acknowledged.
She is named “mouse” by Thomas; she is anything but. She scales high fences, picks pockets, skilfully wields a knife or sword, and is an experienced actress when needed. Thomas and eventually the other characters who inhabit this story, such as the handsome Gillen and his associates involved in the overthrow of the oppressive Catalan rulers, make her indispensable to these abilities.
I was also captivated and really brought this tale to life by the rich historical details Sowards offers. I haven’t read anything before like this book. Set in Greece in 1379, I enjoyed learning so much about a place and time and groups of people that I didn’t really know about. In Of Sword and Shadow, history comes to life in a real and moving way.
I would love to read other works by this same author.
I received a complimentary copy of this book. The opinions expressed in this review are completely my own.
